Program Description:
Post-Mining
Land
Use:
Tailing ponds as solar energy farms
Alex Cronin and Srikant Annavarapu will present a program on the use of tailings impoundments for installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) farms. The energy produced can be used initially for mining operations and for the power grid after mine closure. Most mines already have an economic advantage as a PV farm site use since substantial electrical transmission-line infrastructure exists, reducing one of the major costs of new PV farms. The payback period of PV installation and energy production at mine sites and integrating PV systems with erosion control and revegetation programs will be discussed.
